In what seems like a lifetime ago, I lived within the city proper of Pittsburgh, PA. During that time, I ran across a blog about having a plant nursery and selling plants in your driveway. I was so intrigued by this concept, I followed this blog for years. I dreamed of having my own nursery at my little city plot, but doubt and fear always got in my way of actually doing it.
My grandparents had a farm in Hickory, Pennsylvania. This is where I was born and where I grew up. Through life circumstance, I was blessed to be able to move to the farm.
As I tried to figure out what to do with all of this land, the thought of the nursery kept nudging me.
In my mind. I could hear my grandfather’s voice telling me, “you can do anything you put your mind to!”, followed by my voice saying, “I don't know how to run a business, how would I even start, what if no one buys my plants.” Thousands of negative thoughts, fears, and doubts crossed my mind.
That all changed in 2016. I went to church and the topic of the sermon was “What to do when God puts a dream on your heart." On that day, I definitely had that feeling God was talking to me! The last thing the Pastor said was, “When God puts a dream on your heart, just do it, and give God the glory!” The very next day, Glory Fields Hometown Nursery was born!
That year was spent learning, growing my stock plants, propagating, and killing a lot of plants. I didn't sell anything until 2017. That year, I sold 734 plants. Monumental! Each year since, my little nursery continued to grow.
In 2020, my sister-in-law suggested I add U-Pick flowers to my little business. Even though I loved the thought of having a flower farm, I was terrified of doing something new. That was until a customer suggested I start with one flower....Zinnias!!!! That very day I bought my Zinnia seeds, my husband plowed up 3 50-foot rows, I got them all planted, and amazingly they grew! I loved my U-Pick Zinnias, and so did my customers. It was a little patch of beauty and serenity in a chaotic world. Needless to say, I was hooked on flower farming! (Thank you, Barb and Heidi!)
In 2021, I decided to expand my little Zinnia patch to a 1/2-acre of cut flowers. It was a year of trial and error; trying to figure out what to grow and how to grow it. Despite the learning curve, it was beautiful! It would bring tears to my eyes when people would come back from the flower field with their buckets full and happily say, "that' just made my day!." It is so satisfying providing the simple beauty and joy of flowers from my home to yours.
